At 12:01 a.m. on Jan. 1, 2023, Ohio sports betting will begin for both retail and online sports betting. On Aug. 3, the Ohio Casino Control Commission released the timetable, which has proceeded at breakneck speed since then.
Online sports betting licenses will be primarily given to sports teams, racinos, and casinos. Each of these groups will get one license. From the start, there may be as many as 25 sportsbooks in Ohio. If a casino or sports franchise with one of these licenses wishes to apply for a second skin, it must show that the second skin will benefit Ohio marginally.

- September 20, 2022 – At the Ohio Casino Control Commission meeting on September 21, there will be ten sports gaming companies seeking licensure.
- September 7, 2022 – The Ohio Casino Control Commission meeting approved the first eight sports gaming proprietors. If applicants do not have all required paperwork submitted by Oct. 5, they will not be eligible for a Jan. 1 launch date.
- August 26, 2022 – According to the state’s eLicensing system, as of this morning nearly 800 retailers have applied for their Type C host license. This will allow each licensee two sports betting kiosks.
- August 11, 2022 – Hall of Fame Village and Betr, a micro-betting platform powered by Simplebet, confirmed a 10-year online sports betting agreement.
- August 3, 2022 – Casino Control Commission Executive Director Matt Schuler said that Ohio sportsbooks can accept bets at midnight on January 1.

Ohio sports betting law
Following the approval of HB 29, which legalized sports betting in the state, it has become a legal sports betting destination.
Different types of sports betting licenses exist, and companies in Ohio will soon have legal options for sports betting close to them.
Type A licens
There are only 25 of this type of license available, and they’re specifically for companies based in Ohio or those with a Type B license from the state. Even though it’s not entirely clear who exactly is supposed to be eligible for the license, it seems that it’s mainly casinos and professional sports organizations within the state.
Type B licens
The OCCC offers Type B licenses for physical sportsbooks inside Ohio. A total of 40 such licenses may be issued by the commission, with the number determined in part by population size of the county where it would reside.
Type C licens
The most popular type of license, Type C, will be available for bars, restaurants, and any other locations that serve alcohol. These locations may soon have sports betting kiosks. Any retailer that sells Ohio Lottery tickets is eligible to apply.
