Against the Spread (ATS)
A team's win-loss record measured by whether they covered the point spread, not whether they won outright. Used to evaluate handicapping performance. Point Spread Guide →
Alt Line
An alternative spread or total offered at modified odds. Example: Bengals -3.5 -110 (standard), Bengals -6.5 +130 (alt line at longer odds).
American Odds
The standard odds format in US sportsbooks. Negative numbers indicate favorites (-150 = bet $150 to win $100). Positive numbers indicate underdogs (+200 = bet $100 to win $200). How to Read Odds →
Arbitrage (Arb)
Placing bets on all outcomes of an event at different sportsbooks where price differences guarantee profit. Most Ohio sportsbooks prohibit "guaranteed" arbitrage strategies.

B

Backdoor Cover
When a team scores a meaningless late touchdown or basket that covers the spread despite losing the game. The "backdoor" is the unlikely covering path for the underdog.
Bad Beat
A bet that loses on a freak late-game play after appearing certain to win. Common in NFL where a meaningless garbage-time score swings the spread.
Bankroll
The total amount of money set aside specifically for sports betting. Sharp bettors keep it separate from their primary checking account. Bankroll Management →
Bet Slip
The in-app section where you build, review, and confirm wagers. Holds your selections before you finalize the bet.

A non-cashable token issued by a sportsbook as part of a welcome offer or promotion. When wagered, only the profit returns on a win; not the stake. Bonus Terms Decoded →

Chalk

Closing Line
The final odds offered on a market before the event starts. Beating the closing line consistently is the strongest predictor of long-term profitability. Sharp Betting Guide →

The difference between the price you got and the closing line. Positive CLV (you got a better price than the close) is the key metric sharp bettors track.
Cover
When a team wins by enough to beat the spread (for favorites) or stays close enough to beat the spread (for underdogs).

D
